How To Wear & Take Off Compression Stockings
SockWell Compression Stockings are made to help you feel your best every day. Putting them on (donning) and taking them off (doffing) doesn’t have to be a daily hassle. With a little practice and a few helpful tips, what once seemed tricky can quickly become a simple part of your daily routine.
Below are a simple steps to guide you:
How to Wear Medical Compression Stocking
Steps
Sit down in a comfortable position preferably somewhere you can lift your leg up easily, like the edge of a bed or chair.
Use donning gloves (if available) these help grip the fabric without damaging it and protect your skin.
Gently roll down the stocking from the top start at the top band and slowly roll or fold the stocking downward toward your ankle.
Avoid pulling harshly. Slide it over the heel carefully Once you reach the ankle, use your fingers or gloves to gently loosen the fabric around the heel. This is the tightest part, so go slow.
Pull it off the foot after the heel is free, slide the stocking off your foot completely. If you used a foot slip during wearing, this step will be easier.
How to Remove Medical Compression Stocking
Steps
Begin by putting on the foot slip that came with your compression stockings.
Slide your foot into it completely so that it covers your toes, the ball of your foot, and most of the foot's arch.
Take the compression stocking and hold it with both hands Reach inside the stocking and pinch the heel area from the inside, then turn the stocking inside out until the heel pocket is visible.
With the stocking prepared, place your toes into the toe area and start pulling the stocking gently over the foot and around the heel.
As you continue, ensure the heel of the stocking is aligned with your own heel.
Make sure it lies flat and snug, not rolled or folded.
The gloves give you a better grip and help avoid snags or tears in the fabric. Pull the top band of the stocking up to its correct and comfortable position (either below the knee or mid-thigh depending on your stocking type).
Finally, gently pull the foot slip out from under your foot.
Useful Tips & Tricks :
- Putting on stockings in the morning before starting your day is ideal. This is the time your legs are least swollen.
- At night, it is recommended that you take off your compression stockings before going to bed unless specifically advised by your doctor.
- If provided, use the silk foot slip to don your stockings. The foot slip helps the stocking slide easily over the foot.
- Do not bunch up the stocking like you do regular socks. This will make it harder to put on.
- Applying lotions or creams before putting on compressions stockings makes it harder to put them on and may also damage them. On the other hand, dusting a bit talcum powder can help them slide on more easily.
- Practice and experiment – the process gets easier with time and consistency!
